Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate overtime for construction workers?

There's no legal overtime rate in the UK. Check your contract or industry agreement (JIB, BESA, BATJIC). Common rates: 1.5× for weekday overtime, 2× for Sundays and bank holidays.

What are standard working hours for UK tradespeople?

Most trade agreements set 37.5–39 hours per week (Mon-Fri). Typical site hours are 07:30–16:00 or 08:00–16:30 with 30 minutes for lunch.

Do I need to keep timesheets for my workers?

Yes. UK employers must keep records of hours worked for at least 2 years under the Working Time Regulations 1998. For CIS subcontractors, you need payment records.
